Традиционный дум-метал ( traditional doom metal) — медленный, меланхоличный, базирующийся на риффах метал, возникший под влиянием Black Sabbath и движения NWOBHM. Историю традиционного дум-метала делят на четыре волны: первая волна начинается с создателей всего жанра — прото-дум-групп Black Sabbath и Pentagram; вторая волна затрагивает середину 1980-х годов, особенно работы групп Saint Vitus и Candlemass; третья волна начинается с успешного дебютного альбома Cathedral — Forest of Equilibrium; четвёртую волну связывают с Reverend Bizarre.
